Services
With a wealth of experience behind us, the Archibald Shaw team have built an impressive portfolio of experience across a variety of civil and structural engineering disciplines.
From hotel pool designs through to designing one of the most iconic roofs in central London, Canary Wharf, we have been lucky enough to work on some very exciting projects during our 60 years as a practice.
Our service includes inspection and advice on engineering solutions. We also provide advice and evidence in connection with legal proceedings, with our senior team members often called upon to act as expert witnesses in a number of areas.
At Archibald Shaw we offer a full range of consulting engineer services. These range from early advice and appraisal of potential projects through to working designs, obtaining tenders and contract administration.
Civil Engineering
Civil Engineering shapes modern life as we know it. It is the design, construction and maintenance of our environment – from the roads you drive to work on, through to the office buildings in which you work.
The construction of road networks, the building of bridges, canals and sewers, the creation of rail networks and the design and construction of large buildings are all down to civil engineers. It encompasses a wide range of disciplines such as structures, geology, hydrology, hydraulics, materials science, mechanics and environmental science.
Civil engineers look at inventive ways to create, improve and protect our surrounding environment. These can include:
-
Highway design and maintenance, including structures and bridges
-
Multi-storey car parks
-
Urban safety and traffic calming
-
Coast protection and marinas
-
Sewerage design
-
Reservoirs
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) represents civil engineers around the world, acting as a qualifying body and central hub for both students and qualified practitioners.
Archibald Shaw has a team of engineers experienced in both civil and structural engineering. If you need more information on our services please contact us now by calling 01243 786471 or visit our Contact page.
Structural Engineering
Structural engineering is a discipline within civil engineering and a vital element for any structure.
Structural engineers analyse and design load bearing components of a proposed building. It is a creative and technical discipline, using physical laws and the knowledge of the structural performance of a variety of materials and understanding how they will perform.
They focus on the stability of a structure and how it can work in a safe way and is a fundamental part of any structure or building. At Archibald Shaw our structural engineers will work alongside civil engineers and architects on a variety of projects from beginning to end, including:
-
Theatres and stadia
-
Hospitals
-
Bridges and tunnels
-
Houses and high-rise buildings
Like civil engineering, there is also a professional body for structural engineers. The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) was founded in 1908 to provide information and education, and to represent the profession.
